Residents of Grover Beach have an opportunity to serve their community as part of the City Council. The City is now accepting applications to serve on the City Council through Friday, April 9 to fill a vacancy created by former Council Member Mariam Shah’s recent resignation due to moving outside of the city limits. The City will recognize Ms. Shah and her many contributions to the City during her six years of serving on the City Council at a future Council meeting.
“While we are sad to see Council Member Shah move on, we look forward to finding a Grover Beach resident with a passion for public service to step into this important role at this exciting time for Grover Beach and work with the rest of the Council in addressing key goals including economic development, housing and homelessness, public safety and street improvements,” said Grover Beach Mayor Jeff Lee.
At the March 22, 2021 meeting, the Grover Beach City Council decided to move forward with filling this vacancy by appointment rather than holding a special election which would take additional time and funding. All eligible Grover Beach residents are invited to apply for the remaining term of this Council seat which expires December 2022. To be eligible to become a candidate, you must be a resident of and be a registered voter in Grover Beach.
All eligible applications received by 5:00 p.m. on April 9 will be provided to the City Council for review at a special meeting on April 19 where the Council will conduct candidate interviews and make an appointment for the position. Once the appointment process is complete and the appointee takes the Oath of Office, a new Council Member orientation will be scheduled with the City Manager, City Attorney and City Clerk before the newly appointed Council Member attends their first meeting.
Council Members are expected to attend two regular Council meetings per month on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, with special meetings or workshops as needed, and serve on regional boards, commissions and subcommittees that typically meet once a month. Council Members have an important role in developing City policies, adopting ordinances and resolutions, making land use decisions, approving agreements and contracts, and hearing appeals on decisions made by City staff or advisory committees. Council Members receive a stipend of $600 per month for their service.
Interested community members are encouraged to apply by the April 9th deadline for this unique opportunity to serve our community on the City Council. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact City Clerk Wendi Sims in the City Manager’s Office at (805) 473-4567 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
