1. What type of work requires a permit?

Projects that involve remodeling, adding, or removing square footage; signs; or any work that involves electrical, plumbing, or mechanical equipment requires you to obtain a permit. For more details, please contact the Community Development Department at (805) 473-4520.

2. What are the requirements for fences?

Fences six feet or less in height do not require a permit. However, they must meet the requirements of Grover Beach Development Code Section 3.10.020. Solid fences located within a front setback may not exceed three feet in height. A fence or wall up to six feet in height is allowed within a front setback when the portion above three feet is 90% open and light emitting (e.g., wrought iron). Please contact the Community Development Department at (805) 473-4520 if you have any questions or have a corner lot and need to determine which frontage is defined as the front.

3. Vacation Rental Regulations (Short Term Rentals)

Applications for Short-Term Rental (STR) Permits for legal dwellings are accepted for review and processing, on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must be submitted online.  Applications will not be accepted at City Hall or via U.S. Mail. The required submission information and the permit process will differ depending if you will be operating an "owner-occupied" or "non-owner occupied" short-term rental. Prior to submitting for a STR permit, please review our Administrative Rules.

4. How do I report a possible Municipal Code violation?

5. Do I need a Building Permit for a shed?

A shed that is 120 square feet or less, that does not have electrical, mechanical, or plumbing, does not require a Building Permit and is not required to meet the minimum setback requirements per Grover Beach Development Code Section 3.10.070.B.2.c

6. What are the Building Permit Fees for a new single family residence?

The Building Permit Fees for a typical single family residence range from $25,000 to $30,000, depending on the size. This includes plan check fees, inspection fees, and development impact fees. However, fees can vary, so please contact the Community Development Department for fees based on a specific project scope of work. An example of the typical City fees for an 1,800 square foot residence with a 500 square foot garage and 300 square feet of patio are available here.
